Below you will see a short series of combat pics between two captive bred and born male Pancake tortoises.  I now believe a fair amount of male to male combat is absolutely essential to produce a higher percentage of viable Pancake Tortoise eggs.  Male to male combat has only been utilized on a regular basis this breeding season (2002 - 2003) and so far we have identified more viable eggs than in seasons past.  Combat is monitored for it's entire duration and is generally a brief period of no more than five to ten minutes.  The 'wounds' were the result of combat sessions that lasted too long.
