Burmese
(Asian Brown and Black) Mountain Tortoise
Manouria
emys emys and Manouria emys phayrei
The Burmese (Asian Brown and Black) Mountain Tortoises are currently
represented
by 1.1 of Manouria emys emys and an adult female Manouria emys
phayrei (on breeding loan). These large East Asian tortoises are
scarce
in this hobby. Most imported animals come in dehydrated with
large
parasite loads. With adequate attention they can make full
recoveries
in a short amount of time. These tortoises benefit from high
humidity
areas such as mud bogs to wallow in. Reproductive success in
captivity
is not common and is typically marked by a single clutch of eggs for
the
season.
